Voice over

When I implement voice over in eLearning, I don’t narrate the text on screen because the audience is able to read faster in their mind. I adhere the following principles:

  • Write the script for the ear, professional voice over artists improvise.
  • Use different voices for different sections.
  • Change tone of voice and speed frequently.
  • Include music to evoke emotions.
  • Surprise with sound effects and onomatopoeiae (e.g. whoosh, bump) to make them smile.

Video

I use Video to achieve a learning objective not because they are easy to produce and they are popular. Videos induce implicit learning (learning by observing) and show content in real life which makes it more real and the lesson sticks.

The mirror neurons in our brain allow us to copy the action. We can picture ourselves in the same situation and imagine how it feels. Prompting someone to visualise an action helps the brain to think about how to perform an action and we are more likely to actually do the action, because we already thinking about it.

Video Production Steps

  1. Storyboard
  2. Script
  3. Production Plan
  4. Shoot
  5. Edit

The storyboard focus on one learning objective with one purpose, one audience and one context.

  • What does the viewer need to know?
  • What does the viewer need to do?

Use the ROPS model to chunk and present the content.

  • Review, rapport, relate
  • Overview
  • Present
  • Summarise

A script is a crucial tool for video management.

  • Write for your audience.
  • Write content aurally.
  • Use active voice and words that resonate with audience.
  • Cut out redundant words.

Scripts keep the team on the same page, ensure consistency for editing, avoid unnecessary retakes, make you look better and ensure brand consistency.

Message layers in videos

A video can convey a message with action, pictures, voice and
music.

message layers in videos

A video can convey a message with action, pictures, voice and music. To make a video interesting implement change every 4-5 seconds:

  • Shots
  • Angles
  • Voices
  • Music

Include surprise like sound effects and occasional visual effect. Play with incompleteness, the audience will fill-in the gaps. End a chapter on a cliffhanger so the audience wants more or thinks about what will happen next. You want them to think about the content.

Interactive videos

The goal of this interaction is to follow proper procedure at the airport check- in desk, using video to add interactive context.
