Learning and Development is a long term investment

Information Pool

Your Learning Management System (LMS) could not only house courses and information but also facilitate a community of practice and housing the Information Pool.

Up-to-date information like job descriptions, directives, policies, processes, records, job aids, FAQ, Quick Reference Guides, etc.

Social Network functions like wikis, blogs, discussions, chats, videos and podcasts.

This content needs curation in order to make sure all the objects have an expiry date, have meta tags in order to be searchable. Further more they have to be valid, relevant and instructionally sound.

The goal is to keep the KNOW-HOW in the Company.

Implementing 70:20:10

70% of learning happens through daily tasks, challenges and practice.
20% of learning happens with and through other people, like coworkers.
10% of learning happens through structured training courses and programs.

Those numbers are just a framework, they vary from job to job.

Many companies focus too much on the 10% instead of the learning process and the transfer to the workplace. To counter the Ebbinghaus’ forgetting curve, training needs to be recalled. Training events need to be embedded in following process:

  • A pre-training e-mail reminder about the course with some reflective questions. Include the managers in this process.
  • The Training event.
  • Post-training coaching, assessment and quizzes right after the training just tests the short term memory. You want to transfer the knowledge to the long term memory. Implement recall activities 2 days and 2 weeks after the event.
  • Refresher training just before you need to apply it in the workplace to make sure it’s done correctly.
